Chapter 5: Quentin
This chapter begins with the meeting of Quentin. Quentin is a very intelligent boy that is fairly unpopular because he is so smart. He later becomes Sonny's partner and driving force in the rocket building and experiment in creating the black powder. While the experiments are taking place Sonny finally gets up the courage to ask Dorothy out on a date. Although Sonny does go over to her house he doesn't entirely get the chance to ask her out and he changes the subject.
Chapter 8: Construction of the Cape
The resemblence between the construction of USA's rocket program and the development of the rocket boys continue to progress. Including the establishment of NASA. The main point of this chapter isn't directly towards the rocket boys but the lawsuit influnced by the football parents. The football team was suspended for the next year which consequently means Jim won't have a football scholarship and will have to find another course into college. The rocket boys end the chapter with the beginning of the construction of their own cape.
Chapter 7: Cape Coalwood
Continuing the fued with his father, Sonny has been instructed not stop the rocket launching. He still does not quit though, he continues with the black powder, filling pop bottles with it and measuring the explosion. The people of Coalwood are very apprehensive of the explosions and are worried about the mine since it is the main concern of the town. The battle between the father and the son has now started to play a role on the entire town. The preacher on Sunday does a sermon on fathers and sons. Everyone is then reminded that while a son should respect his father, it is a father's job to help his son achieve his dreams. After the sermon Homer is convinced just enough to let his son have a place of his own to launch his rockets, even if he still does not agree with his son.
Chapter 6: Mr. Bykovski
This chapter begins with Army Ballistic Missile Agency sucessfully launching the first United States satellite. Along with that, more conflicts between Homer and Sonny are brought up and exposed. Homer tells Sonny to stop the rocket building, but Sonny doesn't listen and goes behind his back. This leads to the meeting of Ike Bykovski. Ike is a night shift welder at the mine and helps Sonny build his rockets even if he knows he's not supposed to. The next rocket launched hits Homers office at the mine and the incident leads the Homer calling the man who help Sonny build the rocket a theif.
