October Sky
Chapter 1: Coalwood
The story begins describing Coalwood and how the town was at war with itself. It then begins to descibe the mine and how the whole town depends on the mine for the town to continue being existent, it also begins to focus in on the Hickam family and what they are like.
Chapter 4: The Football Fathers
After Big Creek's football team has an undefeated season they are forced out of state championships. After their attempt to sue the state turns them down. After Homer fighting a losing battle for Jim it shows the differences between Homer and Sonny even more than before. In the chapter Homer also gets the news that he has a spot the size of a dime on his lung that is making him very sick. In the meantime Americans attempt to launch their first spaceship. Which brings back the importance of Sonny't attempts in rocket building
Chapter 3: Mom
Sonny's first rocket launch led to the destruction of his mothers fence and scaring most of the town with its explosion. His mother did not punish him for his mishap she saw an opportunity for her son to leave Coalwood, if Sonny was able to build a rocket and convince his father he was smart enough for college.
Chapter 2: Sputnik
This chapter starts with the broadcasting of the launch of sputnik over the radio to Americans. It also tells about the activitt in Coalwood a few days after the launch of Sputnik. The launch of Sputnik is what launched Sonnys urge to start building rockets and learning about them. The chapter in additon to everything else talks about Sonny's strugglr with his father, his brother, girls, and the beginning of the rockets.
