October Sky
Sonny Hickam also known as
Homer Hickam Jr
Sonny was actually named Homer Hardley Hickam Jr but because of the boys personality his mother started calling him "Sunny". Homer was a young boy in a mining town in a West Virginia town. Homer wanted his father's approval and he knew that if he followed in his footsteps and spent his life in the mines he would gain his approval. But Homer had another idea for himself, he dreamed of going to college and devoting his life to rocket technology. The book October Sky is a true story based on the events that led Homer closer to his goals of reaching for the sky and gaining respect and approval from his father. Homer is the narrator of the story October Sky, and is one of the main BCMA leaders/scientists.
Roy Lee Cooke
Roy Lee was a friend of Sonny' since they were little kids. His father was killed in a mine accident. Roy Lee teaches Sonny something about girls. He was a major pervert and playboy, he was known as The Big Creek Lovemaster. Roy was also a member of the BCMA.
Sherman Siers
Sherman is a friend of Sonny's that had polio as a child. He was still able to run as fast as everyone else and no one seemed to mind. He's a member of the BCMA, he is the most observant and pracitcal member of the team.
Jimmy "O'Dell" Carroll
O'Dell was also a friend of Sonny's. He's the excited and most emotional member of the group. His father drove the garbage truck, allowing O'Dell to many useful items.. From the attempt at the metal pipes for scrap that almost got Sonny killed to the beneficial gensing harvesting, O'Dell was always thinking of ways to make money.
Quentin Wilson
Quentin was an intelligent boy who was picked on a lot, he was the lead innovatibe scientist on the BCMA. He carried around a suitcase full of books everywhere he goes and always seems to find an excuse to get out of gym class. He has a very enthusiastic personality and often astonishes the townspeople with his exceptional vocabulary when he gets excited.
